Take a Sutra for a Walk: Contemplative Walking Meditation

Daniela shares that meditation does not have to be seated: in contemplative meditation, you take a sutra or a short quote out on a walk and let it percolate. She asks Christopher for a line from Patanjali, and offers a favorite question from the back of a hoodie: 'Who am I without my stories?' A sutra is a sentence or 2 that you let move through you as you walk, and effortless meditation is about enjoyment.

Questions people ask

Can I meditate while walking?

Yes. Daniela says meditation does not mean you are seated. You could be out on a walk. She describes a form of contemplative meditation where you take a sutra or a short quote along with you, mull it over and let it percolate as you gently walk.

What is a sutra?

Daniela describes a sutra as a sentence or 2 at the most, the kind of line that gives you a mic drop, mind blow moment. In the clip, a line from Patanjali comes up: yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. Daniela's favorite is a question printed on the back of a hoodie: who am I without my stories?

Do I need to think hard about the sutra?

No. Daniela says she is not sitting there thinking about it. She allows the line to move through her while she gently walks, and she describes Effortless Meditation as being about enjoyment. For lines to walk with, The Radiance Sutras introduces Lorin Roche's book.
