Position, Not Posture: How to Sit for Meditation

Daniela teaches position, not posture. Before you sit, ask yourself what position would be nourishing and supportive right now: lying down, sitting up with a chair or wall and a small pillow at your back, or cross-legged if that is your favorite. She asks you to set aside those Instagram photos of people lost in bliss, with a simple question: who is taking the picture?

Questions people ask

What is the best position for meditation?

Daniela calls it position, not posture. Before you sit, ask yourself what position would feel nourishing or supportive right now. You may want to lie down, or to sit up straight with a chair or a wall for support and a little pillow at the small of your back. If you love sitting cross-legged on the ground, do that.

Do I need to sit cross-legged to meditate?

No. Daniela asks you to set aside the pictures of people who look lost in bliss, and then asks who is taking the picture. Your body and your inner guidance will tell you what position you want today, even for a 60-second sit. Supported and comfortable is all you need.

Is position part of preparing for meditation?

Yes. It is the Settle step of SSFB, Daniela's 4-step preparation in Lesson 3 of the Effortless Meditation Course. How to Prepare for Meditation walks through all 4 steps, and the SSFB card is free to download on that page.
